When he came to, they stood on the landing of a grand house with large, portrait oil paintings on the walls. He saw a little girl sitting on the top stairs, dressed in a green nightgown with tears in her eyes.

“She can’t see us so you don’t have to worry,” the tiny woman said.

“What are we doing here?”

“Memory cleaners.” She handed him an object that looked like a hammer.

“What am I supposed to do with this?”

“Didn’t you ever wonder why as a little boy you couldn’t achieve silence no matter how hard you tried? How it seemed to feel real to you? It’s because you’re a sensor. People like you are rare even among our type, but you can see and taste and even touch sound. Tonight we’re going to clean this house because the sounds of the former tenants are still in the walls and affecting the people in the house.”

Damion felt a sudden rage. “You’re telling me all this now!”

“I was there,” she said in a soft voice.

“No, you weren’t. All this time I’ve felt like I didn’t belong. As if something was wrong with me and you’re telling me that I’m not fully human and that I’m suppose to start helping strangers and—”

The tiny woman blinked. “That’s good.”

“What’s good?’

“Your anger. You haven’t been really angry in a long time. Use it tonight.”

He didn’t move. “Why are you coming to me now? Why didn’t you come then? Why didn’t anyone help us? If it’s just the sounds then why didn’t a memory cleaner—”

“Your family was too broken. There was nothing we could do.”

He dropped the hammer. “Then you can’t help her either,” he said looking at the girl. “She just needs to grow up and escape. That’s what my brother did. I don’t want to be here.”

The melody “Silent Night” drifted towards him from an unknown source twisting his heart. The hammer appeared back in his hand.

“Prove it,” the woman said.

Damion took the hammer and slammed it against the wall. It shattered like glass, revealing another wall behind it. A wall that shimmered with fresh, clean air.

“Good job. That would have taken me much longer.”

He stared at the shattered pieces around him and watched them slowly melt into the ground. He looked up and saw that the little girl’s tears had dried up. She raced down the stairs and her father greeted her with a hug.

“What happened?” he asked amazed.

“The argument ended with forgiveness,” the woman said in a simple, happy tone. “Let’s go to the next house.”

“But I don’t want…”

Seconds later Damion stood in a stylish apartment fitted with white leather seats and abstract metal statues. His companion rested her hands on her tiny hips and shook her head as she stared at a spot on the cream tiled floor.

“Oooh, this is one stubborn fight. It will take awhile to get the stain out.” She handed him a brush.

He frowned. “Why are we using tools? Can’t you just wave your hand or something?”

She shrugged. “This is the rule.
