When he came to, they stood on the landing of a grand house with large, portrait oil paintings on the walls. He saw a little girl sitting on the top stairs, dressed in a green nightgown with tears in her eyes.
âShe canât see us so you donât have to worry,â the tiny woman said.
âWhat are we doing here?â
âMemory cleaners.â She handed him an object that looked like a hammer.
âWhat am I supposed to do with this?â
âDidnât you ever wonder why as a little boy you couldnât achieve silence no matter how hard you tried? How it seemed to feel real to you? Itâs because youâre a sensor. People like you are rare even among our type, but you can see and taste and even touch sound. Tonight weâre going to clean this house because the sounds of the former tenants are still in the walls and affecting the people in the house.â
Damion felt a sudden rage. âYouâre telling me all this now!â
âI was there,â she said in a soft voice.
âNo, you werenât. All this time Iâve felt like I didnât belong. As if something was wrong with me and youâre telling me that Iâm not fully human and that Iâm suppose to start helping strangers andââ
The tiny woman blinked. âThatâs good.â
âWhatâs good?â
âYour anger. You havenât been really angry in a long time. Use it tonight.â
He didnât move. âWhy are you coming to me now? Why didnât you come then? Why didnât anyone help us? If itâs just the sounds then why didnât a memory cleanerââ
âYour family was too broken. There was nothing we could do.â
He dropped the hammer. âThen you canât help her either,â he said looking at the girl. âShe just needs to grow up and escape. Thatâs what my brother did. I donât want to be here.â
The melody âSilent Nightâ drifted towards him from an unknown source twisting his heart. The hammer appeared back in his hand.
âProve it,â the woman said.
Damion took the hammer and slammed it against the wall. It shattered like glass, revealing another wall behind it. A wall that shimmered with fresh, clean air.
âGood job. That would have taken me much longer.â
He stared at the shattered pieces around him and watched them slowly melt into the ground. He looked up and saw that the little girlâs tears had dried up. She raced down the stairs and her father greeted her with a hug.
âWhat happened?â he asked amazed.
âThe argument ended with forgiveness,â the woman said in a simple, happy tone. âLetâs go to the next house.â
âBut I donât wantâ¦â
Seconds later Damion stood in a stylish apartment fitted with white leather seats and abstract metal statues. His companion rested her hands on her tiny hips and shook her head as she stared at a spot on the cream tiled floor.
âOooh, this is one stubborn fight. It will take awhile to get the stain out.â She handed him a brush.
He frowned. âWhy are we using tools? Canât you just wave your hand or something?â
She shrugged. âThis is the rule.
